Let the Little Things Fall Away - Fall and the Metal Element

An Autumn reflection…

As my young son says, “Mom, keep the little things little!” Something he learned from his fabulous first grade teacher. She works magic in that classroom. Wow, isn’t that the truth! It can be just those little things that we blow up and can get us all bound up sometimes!

It makes me think of the season of Fall, which is the energy of Metal in the Chinese Five Element Cycle, which is ‘allowing things to fall away, release’.  Sounds refreshing, doesn’t it?  A little bit lighter.

I’ve been into mantras lately, using them to help keep my self critic at bay.  One that I use is ‘Let all the little things fall away’. It’s all about helping me keep perspective, especially when I start stressing about stuff that just really doesn’t matter.  It’s funny how easy it is to have that perspective when a loved one is suddenly ill or in trouble, which is when this little saying popped into my head earlier this year when my dad was suddenly hospitalized for a life threatening matter.  All that stuff I was just worrying about seemed to just fall away. Dad made it through! Yay!

So back to the season of Fall and the Metal Element, which is at the end of the cycle in Chinese Medicine.  Metal holds our ability for reflection, gaining perspective and the gold from the experience that has just completed.  Be it a day, an hour, a relationship, a job, a project, a marriage, a life.

Each Element is made up of Meridians, Metal holds the Meridians of Lung and Large Intestine.  These meridians govern those organs and a whole lot more.

Lung is the Yin, the organ gives us life and breath and we also release toxins here. Lung meridian also holds grief, detachment along with inspiration and hope.

Large Intestine is Yang, the organ allows waste to be eliminated.  Large Intestine meridian is also about controlling or holding on vs releasing in our lives.

Everything in the energy world is on a spectrum and is a paradox at the same time.  How’s that for confusing?  It’s actually quite simple and extremely layered and intricate at the same time.  See what I mean?  Luckily you don’t have to completely understand it for the energy to move and for you to feel a shift. You can use your own energy system to release crap you aren’t even aware of that’s holding you back.  I love that part.

With the energy of Metal right now, I am wishing you a release of the little things, maybe even some big things if you are up for it.  Along with some reflection, inspiration and hope at the end of this cycle for you, leading to fresh next steps on your path.

Here is a simple energy exercise (takes 2 minutes!) to help you in your process in this season of Fall, Metal and Letting Go.
